At Tahoe Forest Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, we are focused on a better you. Our specialty-trained foot doctors and staff are dedicated to providing specialized foot care to patients in Truckee, Incline Village, and the surrounding communities.
Foot specialists are doctors and surgeons who have undergone specialized training in understanding, diagnosing, and treating foot issues by offering a wide range of treatment options. For instance, in a single day, a foot doctor might treat patients with bunions, arthritis, tendon injuries, foot deformities, or ingrown toenails either with a surgical procedure or a conservative treatment option, depending on the patient.
Sometimes patients have ankle pain and foot pain at the same time. When a person has a foot or ankle injury, it’s normal to wonder what will happen when they visit a foot doctor. If their condition is extreme, they may have questions about foot surgery or ankle surgery. While surgery might be needed, there are also many nonsurgical treatments for foot and ankle issues. For example, sometimes custom orthotics (shoe inserts) or even proper, basic foot care can bring about significant pain relief. Medications and physical therapy also can be very effective.
If a patient does need surgery, the foot and ankle surgeon will explain the surgery as well as the recovery process. They will develop a treatment plan based on the patient's individual needs and goals.
What your Doctor needs to know
When you have an appointment with a foot doctor, you’ll have an opportunity to describe your pain. Here are some issues you may be noticing that you'll want to share with your doctor:
- Large lump on the side of the large toe or other toes
- Numbness and tingling
- Stiffness
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Toe pain
Common foot and ankle issues
Your doctor may diagnose you with one of the following foot or ankle conditions:
- Bunions: Bony bump located near the big toe.
- Bursitis: Fluid-filled sacs in the joints that become inflamed.
- Fracture: A broken bone. Fracture care may or may not require surgery.
- Gout: A form of arthritis that causes swelling and pain. Typically does not require foot surgery.
- Plantar fasciitis: A type of heel pain.
- Plantar warts: Warts that appear on the bottom of the feet.
Once you are diagnosed, your foot doctor will first consider all nonsurgical treatment options, such as physical therapy or a type of medicine, before recommending orthopedic surgery. However, if nonoperative treatments are ineffective, they will tell you about the surgery they believe will be best for you. If surgery is required, our surgeons have extensive training in the latest ankle and foot surgical procedures.
When you have foot pain or ankle pain, it can take a toll on your whole life. Our foot specialists are not only medical experts, but they’re also knowledgeable professionals who want to do more than just treat your foot or ankle; they want to help you get back to what you love.
