There are many therapeutic benefits to performing exercises and movement in the water. Warm water can be the ideal environment to work on strengthening, mobility, gait, and balance with decreased pressure through the joints.

The buoyancy of water can decrease the stress on joints such as the ankles, knees, hips and spine. This can make some movements easier and less painful for patients who have pain in these joints. The viscosity of water can also add resistance to certain movements and help to improve strength. The density of water can provide additional stability to patients with balance issues. The hydrostatic pressure of water can also be beneficial for patients who experience swelling due to surgery, or other conditions.

The physical therapists at Tahoe Forest Hospital utilize warm water pools for therapy sessions. They provide 1:1 sessions at the Truckee clinic pool, and group classes at the Truckee Rec Center. Please talk to your therapist regarding participating in aquatic therapy.
