What is eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, treats loose or sagging skin around the eyes. It can also improve the vision in people whose sagging upper eyelids obstruct their visual field.
Whether you want to improve your appearance or are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids, eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes. Surgery can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both. It can remove excess skin from the upper eyelids and reduce bagginess from the lower eyelids.
What is the eyelid procedure like?
Anesthesia will be administered so that you will be comfortable during the procedure. Incision lines for eyelid surgery are designed so the resultant scars will not be visible within the natural structures of the eyelid region.
The upper eyelid can be corrected through an incision within the natural crease on the eyelid, allowing for removal or repositioning of fat deposits, tightening of muscles and removal of excess skin.
The lower eyelid may be corrected with an incision just below the lower lash line. Through this incision, excess skin in the lower eyelid is removed, and fat deposits can be re-positioned or removed.
Eyelid incisions typically are closed with sutures or skin glue.
What should I expect during recovery?
Initial healing may include some swelling, bruising, irritation, dry eyes, and discomfort that can be controlled with medication, cold compresses, and ointment. In some cases, your eyes may be loosely covered with gauze after your procedure is completed. As the swelling and bruising subside, the results will appear gradually, revealing a better-defined eyelid and surrounding region and a more rejuvenated appearance.
It is important to practice diligent sun protection and use dark, tinted sunglasses until the healing process is complete.
Who is a good candidate for eyelid surgery?
Individuals without serious eye conditions, are healthy with no medical conditions that can impair healing, are nonsmokers, and have a positive outlook with realistic goals are good candidates for eyelid surgery. Additionally, individuals with upper eyelid skin that sags excessively so the peripheral vision is affected are likely good candidates.
