With gifts from our donors designated to our Health System’s Area of Greatest Need, we have had the incredible opportunity to help purchase a new Belmont Rapid Infuser for our Joseph Family Women and Newborn Care Center and the Tahoe Forest Women’s Center.
Postpartum hemorrhaging occurs in roughly 5 out of every 100 U.S. births and is the leading cause of the loss of maternal life, accounting for nearly 100,000 deaths in the U.S. annually. At Tahoe Forest Hospital over the last 18 months, 21 postpartum mothers experienced significant blood loss during or after birth, with total blood loss classified as a Stage 2 to Stage 3 hemorrhage. Of these 21 patients, five required the emergent transfusion of blood products. With the addition of a Belmont Rapid Infuser, the Tahoe Forest Hospital Joseph Family Center for Women and Newborn Care can provide next-level care to the patients who present with postpartum hemorrhaging. This life-saving equipment provides a pivotal, rapid response in the preservation of maternal life. The use of the Belmont Rapid Infuser will be coordinated with Surgical Services and the Intensive Care Unit; maintaining consistent access to state-of-the-art equipment within hospital departments is a vital aspect of exemplary patient care and safety.
